In October 2024, Voices of Argyll reached an exciting milestone by entering its very first international competition at the renowned Derry International Choir Festival.
Travelling to Northern Ireland with support from Loganair, the choir competed in the Upper Voices category against ensembles from across Europe and beyond, earning an impressive second prize. Their success led to an invitation to perform in the prestigious “Choir of the Festival” Grand Final, where they performed the striking works La Rosa Enflorece and Shiru before an international audience.

The Derry International Choir Festival is one of the leading choral events in the UK and Ireland, attracting choirs from all over the world to celebrate excellence in singing, cultural exchange and musical collaboration. Alongside the competition performances, choir members attended workshops and concerts led by some of the finest conductors, vocal specialists and choirs on the international choral scene, making the trip both inspiring and educational.

During their stay, the choir also enjoyed exploring the historic city of Derry, one of Ireland’s oldest and most culturally rich destinations. Famous for its beautifully preserved 17th-century city walls, Derry offers stunning views across the River Foyle and a vibrant arts and music scene. Choir members enjoyed sightseeing around the historic old town, discovering landmarks such as the Guildhall and the city’s bustling streets filled with cafés, traditional music and local culture.

For many choir members, the trip was their first experience of competing internationally, and the achievement marked a proud moment for the rural Scottish choir. The experience not only brought musical success but also strengthened friendships within the group and created lasting memories through music, travel and cultural exchange.
